Okapi
The okapi /oʊˈkɑːpiː/ (Okapia johnstoni), is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.
Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of zebras, it is most closely related to the giraffe.
The okapi and the giraffe are the only living members of the family Giraffidae.
The okapi stands about 1.5 m (4.9 ft) tall at the shoulder and has an average body length of about 2.5 m (8.2 ft).
Its weight ranges from 200 to 350 kg (440 to 770 lb).
It has a long neck, and large, flexible ears.
Its coat is a chocolate to reddish brown, much in contrast with the white horizontal stripes and rings on the legs and white ankles.
Male okapis have short, hair-covered horns called ossicones, less than 15 cm (5.9 in) in length. Females possess hair whorls, and ossicones are absent.
Okapis are primarily diurnal but may be active for a few hours in darkness.
They are essentially solitary, coming together only to breed.
Okapis are herbivores, feeding on tree leaves and buds, grasses, ferns, fruits, and fungi.
Rut in males and estrus in females does not depend on the season.
In captivity, estrous cycles recur every 15 days.
The gestational period is around 440 to 450 days long, following which usually a single calf is born.
The juveniles are kept in hiding, and nursing takes place infrequently.
Juveniles start taking solid food from three months, and weaning takes place at six months.
Okapis inhabit canopy forests at altitudes of 500-1,500 m (1,600-4,900 ft).
They are endemic to the tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where they occur across the central, northern and eastern regions.
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) classifies the okapi as Endangered.
Major threats include habitat loss due to logging and human settlement.
Extensive hunting for bushmeat and skin and illegal mining have also led to a decline in populations. The Okapi Conservation Project was established in 1987 to protect okapi populations.

It is named after Adam Clayton Powell Jr., the first African-American elected to Congress from New York, and was designed by the African-American architecture firm of Ifill Johnson Hanchard in the Brutalist style.

The sculpture of Edward Kennedy Ellington at 110th Street and Fifth Avenue is the first monument in New York City dedicated to an African American and the first memorial to Ellington in the United States.
A composer, orchestra conductor, and musician, Duke Ellington played a major roll in elevating jazz to the most American of art forms.
Colorful, blues-oriented players such as Johnny Hodges and Cootie Williams played with him, helping to shape his style and inspire his compositions.
The December 1927 opening at the Cotton Club - the showplace of Harlem speakeasies - put the Duke Ellington Orchestra on the jazz map.
With Harlem and the Cotton Club as home base, Ellington began radio broadcasts and recorded for American, English, and French labels. Between 1930 and 1942 he was at his most creative, composing such classics as Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, In a Sentimental Mood, and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. Increasingly recognized as a major American composer, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969.
On July 1, 1997, Robert Graham's Duke Ellington Memorial was unveiled at the northeast corner of Central Park.
Politicians, dignitaries, and Harlem neighborhood residents celebrated the culmination of an effort begun in 1979. Pianist Bobby Short conceived the project, headed fundraising efforts, and coordinated the selection of Robert Graham, a major sculptor of public art, to design the memorial.
The result is a bronze tableau 25 feet high, with an eight-foot sculpture of Ellington standing next to a grand piano. Supporting Ellington and the piano are three 10-foot columns, each topped with three nude caryatid female figures representing the muses.
The monument itself is inside Duke Ellington Circle.
The Circle consists of two semicircular plazas that are stepped to form an amphitheater.

After a large fire on December 18, 2001, it was closed for repairs and reopened in November 2008.
It remains unfinished, with construction and restoration a continuing process.
As a result, it is often nicknamed St. John the Unfinished.
There is a dispute about whether this cathedral or Liverpool Cathedral is the world"s largest Anglican cathedral and church.
It is also the fourth largest Christian church in the world.
The interior covers 121,000 sq ft (11.200 m2), spanning a length of 601 ft (183,2 m) and height 232 ft (70,7 m).
The interior height of the nave is 124 feet (37,8 m).
The cathedral houses one of the nation"s premiere textile conservation laboratories to conserve the cathedral"s textiles, including the Barberini tapestries to cartoons by Raphael.
The laboratory also conserves tapestries, needlepoint, upholstery, costumes, and other textiles for its clients.

The original Slaughtered Lamb was a pub in a small town just north of London, cursed with the bloodline of the Werewolf.
The inhabitants of East Proctor would sacrifice a lamb of their flock and smear the blood over the doors as part of a ritual to ward off the evil spirit of the Werewolf.
A pentangle was also erected as a sign of respect so that the Werewolf would not tresspass on the property of the bearer.
These same rituals were practiced at the local town tavern and it became a standard way of life for the local people.
The Slaughtered Lamb has become well known from the movie "An American Werewolf in London" where two N.Y.U. students are attacked outside the pub, during the English leg of the European tour.
